Facebook & Instagram Text Guidelines
While Facebook no longer enforces the strict 20% text rule on ad images, ads with less text on the image still perform better. Facebook may reduce the delivery of ads with high amounts of text in the main image.
Best practices for ad images:
- Keep text on your ad image minimal and concise
- Focus on high-quality visuals that convey your message
- Place most of your text in the primary text, headline, and description fields instead of on the image itself
- Use clear, readable fonts if text on the image is necessary
Facebook Recommended Character Counts:
- Primary Text: Up to 125 characters (optimal), though longer text is permitted
- Headline: Up to 40 characters
- Description: Up to 30 characters
Instagram Recommended Character Counts:
- Primary Text: Up to 125 characters for optimal viewing (2,200 character maximum)
- Headline: Up to 40 characters
Note: While these are recommendations for optimal performance, Facebook's ad system is now more flexible with text in images. However, ads with less text typically reach more people at a lower cost.
